Release Wave is getting a concert history

Release Wave will deal you shows from the cities you've lived in, ask if you were there, and turn your answers into a public page of every show you've been to.

Release Wave is getting a concert history. It shows you past concerts from the cities you've lived in and asks one question: were you there?

I've wanted this for a while. Most of us have no good record of the shows we've actually been to. Ticket emails get buried, and the memory of a night fades faster than the poster. I wanted a place that just keeps track.

How it works

First you tell it where you lived and when. That matters, because it only deals you shows from those cities during those years. Nobody wants to be asked about a gig in a town they never set foot in.

Then it deals you shows like a deck of cards. Yes, you were there, or no, you weren't. Each yes goes into your book. You can also bring in shows from old tickets, so you don't have to remember everything from scratch.

The book becomes a public page: every show you've been to, in one place you can share.

Where it stands

Right now it covers 8 cities and about 750 venues. Venues change names all the time, so the matching has to handle that. It mostly does. I'm still catching the odd wrong match.

I've been testing it on my own history, which came out to a little over 250 shows. That was humbling and a lot of fun. It also showed me that the first deal in a brand new city was too slow, so I fixed that before anyone else sees it.

What's next

It's only open to me for now. The deck needs more real use before I trust it with other people's memories, and I want to see how it feels after a few weeks, not a few hours.

After that I'll open it up, add more cities, and see what people do with their pages.
